CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ‘IMPROVED SUNRISE SOLO LINE 72-12’ PAPAYA FRUITS SUBMITTED TO DIFFERENT MECHANICAL DAMAGE Rev. Bras. Frutic.
SALOMÃO,LUIZ CARLOS CHAMHUM; CECON,PAULO ROBERTO; AQUINO,CÉSAR FERNANDES; LINS,LEILA CRISTINA ROSA DE; BRAGA,LUCIANO RIBEIRO.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate some changes in the metabolism of papaya fruits submitted to damage by impact, abrasion and compression. Injuries were caused in two areas of 15 cm2 each; in diametrically opposite positions in the equatorial region of ‘Improved Sunrise Solo Line 72/12’ papaya fruits in ripening stage 3 (fruits with 25-40% of yellow skin). After damage, fruits were stored at 15 ± 1 °C and 85 ± 5% RH, and samples were taken at intervals of two days to evaluate skin color index, incidence of diseases, loss of fresh weight, leak of solutes, pulp firmness, soluble solids content and pectinmethylesterase and polygalacturonase activities. The respiratory rate was measured at intervals of 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after damage. The...

Compactation for a better management of marine biomass: applications to fish discards and by-products ArchiMer
Perez-galvez, Raul.
In the framework of the future application of a zero-discard policy in EU fisheries, this thesis aims to develop and implement an efficient and integral waste management both on board the fishing vessels and in land (fish auctions and fish processing industry). To this end, it proposes a compaction operation able to reduce the volume and the water activity of the fish wastes, thus favouring their handling and reducing the economical costs associated to their transport and storage. To asses the viability of a waste compaction operation, the main operation factors governing the process were identified, and their influence upon the performance of the compacting operation was investigated by a statistical approach. Sardine was chosen as fish species since it...

Compression induced intercellular shaping for some geometric cellular lattices BABT
Calbo,Adonai Gimenez; Nery,Amauri Alves.
The wall perimeter fraction, which contact neighboring cells, was named compression ratio (alpha). A zero compression ratio indicates maximum intercellular (air) volume (vG, v/v) and neglectable contact among cells, while alpha=1 indicates complete adherence between neighboring cells and no vG in the lattice. The maximum intercellular air volume (beta, v/v), when alpha=0, was 0.593 for triangular, 0.2146 for square and 0,0931 for hexagonal lattices. The equation alpha=1- (vG/beta)½ was derived to relate alpha, beta and vG in the studied lattices. The relation (P S=p/alpha) between cell turgor (P S) and the tissue aggregating pressure (p), defined as the compression to keep in place a layer of cells, was demonstrated using the compression ratio concept....

ESTIMATION OF THE CHARACTERISTIC VALUE OF WOOD STRENGTH REA
Christoforo,André L.; Almeida,Andrea de S.; Lanini,Tamiris L. S.; Nogueira,Rodrigo de S.; Lahr,Francisco A. R..
ABSTRACT For safety reasons, wood strength values, essential for structural dimensioning, are calculated based on the characteristic value, which corresponds to the 5% percentile of a given probability distribution model. For small samples, the Brazilian normative document ABNT NBR 7190 establishes an estimator of the characteristic wood strength, which can provide a significantly different result from the characteristic value coming from a suitable model of probability distribution. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the best probability distribution model (normal, lognormal, Weibull, and exponential) and the subsequent calculation of the characteristic value indicated by ABNT NBR 7190 (1997), allowing to evaluate its accuracy, being also...

Mechanical properties of castor beans subject to different drying temperatures aiming to disrupt the bean coat REA
Bastos,Adriano C.; Ferraz,Antonio C. De O..
In castor oil extraction process, the bean coat is abrasive to the equipment and releases substances that modify the oil color, reducing its quality. A potential solution would be to run the extraction by compressing only the endosperm. Due to lack of information, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of forced air drying at 40, 60, 80 and 100 ºC and farmyard drying, in the mechanical properties of the beans, aiming to break the bean coat. Castor beans were subjected to compression tests, in two perpendicular directions, at a strain rate of 0.6 mm.s-1. Average values of force, deformation energy, strain, all at rupture, and stiffness were used to evaluate the effects of dehydration. It was observed that the heat treatments did not alter...

Mechanical properties of grain in silos for simulation designs REA
Lopes Neto,José P.; Nascimento,José W. B. do; Marques,Jordânio I.; Costa,Carlos A. da.
ABSTRACT For the calculation of silos structures it has been used new methods and computational tools that require mechanical properties knowledge that are still unknown for most storable materials, especially grains. In this context, we aimed to determine the mechanical properties of rice and beans grains with moisture contents of 10, 12, and 14% by applying four compressive loads (5, 10, 15 and 20). The determined mechanical properties were Poisson's ratio (ν), Modulus of Elasticity (E), and the dilatancy angle (ψ). The procedure consisted in the application of the load in compression cell, adapted from MOLENDA & STASIAK, aiming to simulate loading and unloading of silos. We observed that the Poisson's ratio calculated for both loading and unloading,...

Microflambage et rigidite des composites a fibres longues: Theorie et experiences ArchiMer
Ferron, G; Cardin, C; Grandidier, J; Potier, F.
An original flexion-compression device designed for investigating the elastic behaviour in compression is presented, and the effect of the loading mode on the characteristics of failure is then described. Results on glass-epoxy resin unidirectional composites and laminates are discussed. In the literature the failure of laminated in compression is often ascribed to a mechanism of fiber microbuckling. To discuss the quality of these models, a periodic array of stiff and soft layers is analysed by an asymptotic method. The results are compared with those in the literature and with experimental observations.

Morphometry and Variations of Bony Ponticles of the Atlas Vertebrae (C1) in Kenyans International Journal of Morphology
Karau Bundi,P; Ogeng´o,J. A; Hassanali,J; Odula,P. O.
Atlas bridges, the bony outgrowths over the third segment of the vertebral artery are associated with compression of the artery and nerves. There are limited studies comparing morphometry of the complete atlas bridges and that of the ipsilateral transverse foramen. Bilateral and gender differences in the morphometry of the complete bridges remain relatively unexplored. One hundred and two atlas vertebrae (49 male and 53 female) obtained from the Osteology Department of the National Museums of Kenya were used for this study. The presence of complete posterior atlas bridge (retroarticular canal) and lateral bridge (supratransverse foramen) was noted. Measurements were taken for the diameters of foramina, and the ipsilateral transverse foramina and their...

Strawberry fruit resistance to simulated handling Scientia Agricola
Ferreira,Marcos David; Sargent,Steven Alonzo; Brecht,Jeffrey Karl; Chandler,Craig Kellman.
Harvest operations are currently the main source of mechanical injury of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). Experiments were designed to simulate conditions encountered during commercial handling. Individual fruits were subjected to impact or compression forces with similar energy to determine the sensitivity to mechanical injury. Bruise volume was used as the measurement of injury. Bruise severity increased as a function of impact energy for both impact types. However, dropped fruits had larger bruise volume than fruits submitted to pendulum impactor at the same energy level. Doubling the impact energy (0.040 to 0.083 J) increased bruise volume by 7 times (13 to 91 mm³). Fruits dropped from 380 mm (0.075 J) showed 71% greater bruise volume than those...

Structural quality of soils cultivated with coffee and pasture in an environmental protection area Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Vico Mendes Pereira; Magalhães,Ciro Augusto de Souza; Oliveira,Geraldo César de; Lima,José Maria de.
Studies of soils in Environmental Protection Areas (EPAs) are of great importance, because they are an essential component of ecosystems, directly interfering in environmental sustainability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural quality of soil cultivated with coffee and used as pasture in the Capituva's River microbasin, which is located in the Environmental Protection Area in Coqueiral, south of the state of Minas Gerais. Uniaxial compression test (preconsolidation test) and soil resistance to penetration were used. Undisturbed samples were taken from the surface layer (0-5 cm) of the soils in the area: a typic dystrophic Red Latosol (LVd - Oxisol), a typic eutrophic Red Argisol (PVe - Ultisol), and a typic dystrophic Haplic...

The impact of mechanical compression on cortical microtubules in Arabidopsis: a quantitative pipeline ArchiMer
Louveaux, Marion; Rochette, Sebastien; Beauzamy, Lena; Boudaoud, Arezki; Hamant, Olivier.
Exogenous mechanical perturbations on living tissues are commonly used to investigate whether cell effectors can respond to mechanical cues. However, in most of these experiments, the applied mechanical stress and/or the biological response are described only qualitatively. We developed a quantitative pipeline based on microindentation and image analysis to investigate the impact of a controlled and prolonged compression on microtubule behaviour in the Arabidopsis shoot apical meristem, using microtubule fluorescent marker lines. We found that a compressive stress, in the order of magnitude of turgor pressure, induced apparent microtubule bundling. Importantly, that response could be reversed several hours after the release of compression. Next, we tested...
